Visitors who want to explore NewcastleGateshead’s rich heritage should start with the exhibitions and rolling programme of events at must-see attractions including Newcastle Castle, Great North Museum and Shipley Art Gallery. Seasonal events at Beamish Museum like Great North Steam Fair and Horses at Work weekend are a great way to engage with North East heritage. Or why not pop into St Mary’s Heritage Centre in Gateshead to take part in a wide range of activities including local history talks, tours and workshops.

The annual Heritage Open Days weekend which typically takes place in mid-September s is a brilliant way for visitors who are looking to dig deeper into the history of the North East to get a rare glimpse into historic buildings that are often closed to the public, listen to fascinating talks and even to get a chance to see the Swing Bridge turn.
