Whatever the season, it's good to get outdoors in NewcastleGateshead.

Despite being a bustling city, Newcastle and neighbouring Gateshead are blooming with parks and gardens that make it easy for you to breathe in the fresh, restorative air without travelling far. Whether it’s a fresh autumnal walk to enjoy the changing colours of the leaves; a frosty winter march or a leisurely summer picnic and an evening stroll – there are many open spaces in Newcastle and Gateshead to discover.

It’s good for the soul to breathe in the countryside and with so much leafy-green in Newcastle’s urban setting – you have the best of both worlds – not to mention you’re a skip and a jump away from vast expanses of rolling countryside and wide-open space in nearby Northumberland.

If you're craving some fresh air and a change of scenery, make sure to check out the parks and gardens listed below.

Gibside National Trust  in Gateshead has a stunning park and rolling gardens with woodland walks and a spectacular tree-lined avenue. Outdoor attractions including The Alnwick Garden and English Heritage Belsay Hall, Castle and Garden have large grounds and gardens to explore all year round, while Pet's Corner in Jesmond Dene is a great day out for families ready to discover the furry local residents.

Keen urban walkers can even take an epic stroll from Jesmond Dene, through Armstrong Park and into Heaton Park before wandering down into the Ouseburn and along to the Quayside. Get your boots on and get exploring!
