Make the most of a day out in the countryside and what better place to start than in Gateshead on the south side of the River Tyne? Over half of Gateshead is made up of countryside and an easy place to visit for a breath of fresh air. Go for a walk along a whole host of trails as you explore the stunning scenery. Discover the ‘Route to Relaxation’ trail at the tranquil 18th century landscaped gardens at Gibside National Trust. Go red kite spotting at Derwent Walk Country Park or visit the perfectly picturesque Path Head Water Mill.
Walk, hike or cycle through open countryside, along trails, old railway lines and pathways as you enjoy the countryside surrounding NewcastleGateshead. For the more daring, take on the exhilarating graded mountain bike trails that crisscross through the woodlands of Chopwell Woods in Gateshead. Visitors looking for excellent dog walking will be spoilt for choice in the local countryside too. If you’re not sure where to start, join dog-friendly hotel South Causey Inn in Gateshead at their Monthly Dog Walk on the 1st Saturday of the month.
Enjoy the restorative Northumberland countryside from a walk along miles of Hadrian’s Wall where you can marvel at the ancient engineering of the Wall to the sprawling expanse of woodland encircling the lake at Kielder Forest and Water. Cragside is a stunning National Trust property nestled in the rolling hills of the Northumberland countryside – visit in May to see their famous Rhododendrons in bloom or head to The Alnwick Garden in spring to admire their spectacular cherry blossom.
