This August, the Pride in Gateshead Film Festival returns with three powerful free screenings at Pride Media Centre in Gateshead, shining a spotlight on LGBTQ+ lives, struggles and history through the lens of award-winning documentaries and acclaimed cinema.
Curated as part of the broader Gateshead Pride 2025 programme, each screening is completely free to attend — but booking is essential. Here's what's on:
Tuesday 5 August – Pride (15)
Set in 1984, Pride tells the uplifting true story of an unlikely alliance between striking Welsh miners and LGBTQ+ activists during Margaret Thatcher's Britain. This BAFTA-winning film balances political defiance with emotional punch and sharp British humour.

Tuesday 12 August – Are You Proud? (15)
Ashley Joiner’s documentary dives deep into the UK's LGBTQ+ rights movement, chronicling key moments in history and activism. With rare archive footage and interviews with trailblazing campaigners, it’s a moving reminder of both progress and the road still ahead.

Tuesday 19 August – Welcome to Chechnya (Recommended 16+)
A gripping, harrowing documentary by David France, this film follows activists helping LGBTQ+ people flee brutal persecution in Chechnya. Using groundbreaking tech to protect identities, this is a chilling yet vital piece of filmmaking.
