Jesmond Dene

Set just outside of Newcastle city centre, Jesmond Dene is a narrow wooded valley lined with greenery, large sweeping lawns and a picturesque waterfall, making it a must-visit spot for some quiet time out. The dene itself flows from the River Ouse, and is even home to its very own otter population.

The Quayside

Framed by the infamous seven bridges, the quayside is one of the most recognisable locations in the North East of England. Wander along the River Tyne, take in the sights and you could even try and name all seven of the bridges. We'll give you a helping hand with our next top tip: you can enjoy a short circular route by walking from Cycle Hub, down the quayside, across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, head past The Glasshouse and then back across the Tyne on the Swing Bridge. This route is sure to give you a good mix of sightseeing, fresh air and a solid contribution to your daily step count.

Dunston Staithes

Enjoy panoramic river views with a walk around Dunston Staithes in Gateshead, a historical Grade II listed structure situated along the River Tyne. This impressive structure was built in 1879 and consists of 1,700ft of braced timber. Once serving as a means to transfer coal from local pits, Dunston Staithes stands as a relic of the region's industrial past.

Saltwell Park

First opened in 1876, Saltwell Park in Gateshead is often heralded as one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture and landscaping in the UK. Stretch your legs whilst exploring the vast meandering paths, lawns, rose garden and rockery and even grab a warm coffee from the park cafe. The park covers 55 acres, is home to 12 Grade II listed structures as well as a maze and a children's play area, making it a fantastic place to visit for walkers, families, history and nature lovers alike.
