The time between Christmas and New Year can be a bit strange sometimes - you may feel like you’ve been sat in the house for too long or eaten too many mince pies.

Spend your Christmas vouchers and hit the sales with some shopping in Newcastle and Gateshead. Grab some bargains in the sales at department stores like Fenwick Newcastle and John Lewis and of course there are plenty of well known retailers to choose from in Eldon Square. 

If you want to make a full day of it, why not take your pick from 300 high-street shops at Metrocentre where you can finish off a successful day of shopping by watching a Hollywood blockbuster at Odeon Metrocentre or tuck into some tasty scran at one of newly opened restaurants including Wingstop, Popeyes and Grounded Kitchen.

Have fun with the kids in Newcastle and Gateshead

Baltic Centre For Contemporary Art in Gateshead is exploring what it is like to bring out your inner child and experience play. Equal Play is a new commission by artist Albert Potrony. The exhibition explores play through fun and colourful sculptures that are interactive. 

Now that the Theatre scene has reopened, it means that pantos are back (oh yes, they are)

across Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland. From Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, you can experience all sorts of wonderful magic between Christmas and New Year.

Visit Winter Lights at the Centre for Life and light up your winter in the science centre. Enjoy an array of hands-on activities, luminous live shows, magical light play and festive experiments. Be wowed by Gaia – a great, glowing replica of planet Earth and explore the Play Zone for under 7s. You can see Winter Lights until Friday 4 February 2022.

Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children's Books will have some magical themed exhibitions and storytelling including the Snow Dogs Story Party that will be on every Wednesday at 11am throughout January. 

Beamish Museum have their twelfth night celebrations from Monday 27 December till Sunday 2 January. They have fun family crafts with mask making at Pockerley Old Hall. Plus, there’ll be merry music and displays of delicious twelfth night food with punch and twelfth night cake at Pockerley Old Hall, and traditional food on show in Ravensworth Terrace in the 1900s Town.


Relive the best films of 2021

The Everyman Cinema on Grey Street has put on a festive programme to keep you in the mood between Christmas and New Year. They will be screening some festive and not so festive films for you between 20th-30th December.

Why not experience the glamour of an après-ski scene at Alpine Roof Thirty Nine? Thanks to Fenwick Newcastle, you get the perfect view of the city whilst surrounded by twinkling garlands, dazzling Christmas trees and cosy throws.
