Need some summer holiday inspiration?

The summer holidays are here! 

Whether you're visiting NewcastleGateshead or simply exploring your home town, there are many enjoyable days out for the whole family, that won't need you to cough up the cash. 

You can enjoy an array of FREE family experiences all over the city and beyond. 

Travel is not an issue, with free options also available and if you're feeling peckish, a selection of restaurants are introducing kids eat free schemes over the summer holidays.

You might just be able to pack this all into the six weeks holiday!

Ways to travel

Metro Free travel kids

Take the kids for free on the Metro, Shields Ferry and Arriva, Stagecoach and Go North East busses! Families who are looking for things in the summer holidays in Newcastle and Gateshead are invited to hop on the Metro, jump on a bus or hail the Shield's Ferry! Wherever you're heading, make the most of free travel for the kids. The offer allows an adult with a valid ticket or pass – including the English national concessionary travel card - to take up to three children aged 11 and under free with them on any journey within Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham.

    • Great North Museum: Haymarket (5-minute walk)
    • Shipley Art Gallery: Gateshead Interchange (19-minute walk)

Take your pick of great free museums and attractions which will be hosting activities and events as well as giving you and your family chance to explore their collection of permanent and temporary exhibitions. From Great North Museum to Shipley Art Gallery, Segedunum Roman Fort (children enter free) and Discovery Museum.

There are a selection of events taking place at the museums over the summer, including Tyne and Wear Museums’ Ways to Play. Funtastic and free events and activities across some of NewcastleGateshead’s most loved museums and galleries. Including building a replica Hadrian’s Wall from paper at the Great North Museum or bust some moves at the Silent Disco at the Discovery Museum - Ways to Play - Summer 2022 | Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (

Within the museums, there are dedicated soft plays and play areas for younger visitors, all free of charge. They are perfect spots to hide out if the weather isn't too great! Within Laing Art Gallery you will find the Playspace for under fives and in BALTIC you will find the sensory room with fibre optics, a bubble tube, a light table with coloured shapes and a projector. 

If you wander into Ouseburn to Seven Stories this summer, you can join their regular Summer Storytimes, including Wizards and Witches Summer Story Club (7-10 years old) every Mon-Wed 10am-3pm, or StoryTimes with Ouseburn Farm every Tuesday.

Making your way to the city centre,, you will find GameChangers Festival in The Common Room. A free summer festival celebrating the North East’s mining and engineering past, present and future innovations, marking 170 years of the Mining Institute and 150 years of The Common Room building (the home of the Institute). Including family-friendly events, live music, an exhibition, public lectures and tours. Taking place daily until Septemeber 10th.

If you want to get out the popcorn and enjoy a film for free, NE1's Screen on the Green is the place to be! Enjoy six weeks of family movies, screened for free during the school holidays. The large outdoor screen has taken up its usual position in the heart of Old Eldon Square and films include Encanto; Mary Poppins Returns and The Secret Life of Pets 2. All from the comfort of a deck chair!

Kids eat free

Throughout the six weeks holiday's, eateries in Newcastle and Gateshead are starting kids eat free schemes. From crowd favourite Banyan, to free Sunday dining at Dobson & Parnell there are lots of options to save this summer when dining out. We have listed some of the delicious deals below.

  • Banyan: During the summer holidays kids will be able to eat free with every full priced adult meal purchased. Available Monday to Friday until 6pm from 25th July to 2nd September.
  • Dobson & Parnell: One child can enjoy a free main course when an adult orders two courses on a Sunday
  • Gino D'Acampo Newcastle: One child eats free per adult main course ordered between 18th July and 2nd September from 12noon-7pm. Offer is available to Gino Rewards members only, which is free to sign up here.
  • The Real Greek: Kids eat free every Sunday when an adult spends £10 and over.
  • Hinnies Whitley Bay: Kids eat free until 3rd September, and kids can enjoy a complimentary main course with every adult main course purchased. Available Tuesday-Friday for lunch and dinner before 7pm.
  • Asda Café: Although not free, kids eat for £1 at any Asda café without the need of an adult paying a penny.
