Whether you'd like to enjoy a beer with your beagle, a wine with your weimaraner or a stout with your staffy, you'll never be too far from a dog-friendly pub in Newcastle and Gateshead, and your beloved pooch will be well taken care of too.
Below you'll find just a selection of our most favourite dog-friendly pubs in Newcastle and Gateshead - perfect for post-walk pints, filling dinners, Sunday lunches and pub quizzes, all with your loyal furry pal in tow.
When it comes to Newcastle's dog-friendly pubs, the Brandling Villa in South Gosforth always gets two paws up. It's inarguably Newcastle's most famous dog-friendly pub, boasting its very own 'Pooch Menu' which your pup can wash down with a dog beer - alcohol-free, of course - all of which has been tried, tested and approved by the pub's resident beagle, Frank. At The Brandling Villa, it's a common sight to see a dog under almost every table - if you're not yet a dog owner, here's the place to get your dog fix!
Home to beautiful Jesmond Dene, it's no surprise that Newcastle's Ouseburn Valley also plays host to several dog-friendly pubs, including The Cluny - a long-running live music venue by night, but which serves up refreshing drinks all day long, and a delicious food menu every day until 9pm plus brunch on Sundays. Dogs are always most welcome, making The Cluny the ideal spot to rest your weary legs (no matter how many you have).
Heading into the heart of Newcastle for the day doesn't need to mean leaving your pup behind - The Bridge Tavern, under the Tyne Bridge on Newcastle Quayside, welcomes dogs and their well-behaved owners until 7pm. The Bridge Tavern has a lovely sunny terrace, plus its own micro-brewery on site with real ales served directly to the pulls, so if you're looking for somewhere with a difference to sup a pint with your pooch then this is the place to go.
With no less than three resident pub dogs, Alfie, Hector and Dillon, the award-winning City Tavern just off Northumberland Street welcomes every hound in with open paws, and serves up an extensive gourmet dog treat menu with snacks for every mutt and pedigree. For less furry visitors, there's a contemporary, gastro-pub style menu on offer, and an impressive Vegetarian menu which includes the likes of battered halloumi and chips.
It's not just many pubs in Newcastle that are dog-friendly; super-cool Newcastle City Centre hangout Dat Bar also welcomes furry punters into its bar area. You can order from the restaurant in the bar area too, so visiting with your pup doesn't mean that you can't enjoy their delicious sourdough pizzas.
Popular for its pub quiz, extensive food menu (think towering burgers and fresh, topping-laden pizzas) and excellent choice of real ales, the Northumberland Hussar in Heaton always has a fresh bowl of water waiting for their dog visitors too, who are welcomed in at all times. It's also a great place to watch live sport, and the beer garden is the perfect spot to while away a sunny afternoon.
Gateshead's quirky and dog-friendly The Central bar is housed within a restored Victorian building, and is a great place to stop off for a pint and a bite to eat, especially if you're a big real ale fan. It's even worth visiting The Central just to admire its architecture - the unusually shaped Grade II listed building has been nicknamed 'The Coffin' by locals, and the rooftop terrace offers some pretty unbeatable views over the Tyne.
For real ales, real fires and a real warm welcome for your dogs too, The Black Bull on the edge of Blaydon is a real gem. Located beside Blaydon Burn Nature Reserve and Keelman's Way and with a beer garden that overlooks the river, The Black Bull is a favourite stop for walkers, but with regular busker's nights, live bands and pub quizzes, there's something here for everyone - and your pooch may even make it onto their doggy Wall of Fame.
A thoroughly traditional boozer, The Schooner offers comforting home-cooker pub grub, cask ales and ciders, as well as quiz nights, regular live music and the quintessential jukebox. Plus with plenty of nice walks nearby and a very dog-friendly attitude, it makes a convenient stop-off while you're exploring the river banks with Rover.
