Newcastle Cathedral 2

Newcastle Cathedral holds the story of the city in its stones and monuments and has reopened following a 20-month-long redevelopment supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. This is the only cathedral in the UK dedicated to St Nicholas and represents over 900 years of Newcastle’s development: its iconic Lantern Tower having been a guiding light for ships sailing up the River Tyne.

The refurbishment has ensured that the historic and spiritual landmark in Newcastle has been re-established as a dynamic community hub and a key attraction. The Cathedral has been sympathetically restored and re-modelled into an accessible visitor attraction, whilst at the same time preserving and celebrating its ancient religious roots.

Interactive displays tell the stories of some of the notable characters commemorated in the Cathedral’s vast collection of ledger stones. Other highlights include spectacular stained glass, monuments to Tyneside’s industrial pioneers and the Cathedral’s oldest resident – the 14th-century effigy of a medieval knight.

Visitor facilities include a shop area, café and improved disabled access. Outside, a churchyard trail and landscaped terrace provide a sanctuary to unwind and learn about the Cathedral's place in the city’s medieval quarter.

Alongside a regular pattern of worship and choral music, visitors can take part in events and activities inspired by the Cathedral and the city’s past and present.
