Getting around Newcastle and Gateshead is quick and easy thanks to the Metro which is made up of overground and underground stations across Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, and the coast. The route from the airport to the city centre is one of the fastest in Europe, with Metro trains running every 5-15 minutes. If you're visiting Newcastle city centre and are travelling by Metro, there are a number of Metro stops which you can disembark from.
Haymarket Metro Station is conveniently located at the top of Newcastle's main shopping street, Northumberland Street, and is in close proximity to both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities and Great North Museum.
Monument Metro Station is one of the busiest stops in the UK outside of London, with 10 million people using the stop every year. Close by you will find an entrance to Eldon Square, Theatre Royal, and historic Grey Street, along with a choice of bustling bars and restaurants.
This stop is an excellent choice if visiting Newcastle Castle, Life Science Centre, Discovery Museum or seeing a gig at Utilita Arena and is next to the train station.
St James' Park has a dedicated Metro stop, conveniently located below the football stadium which is also called St James. Central Station and Monument are also in close proximity.
The Nexus Tyne and Wear Metro provides a service between Newcastle upon Tyne to Sunderland every twenty minutes. Board a train heading in the direction of South Hylton and disembark at Sunderland or Park Lane.
