Each year thousands of people take part in the Great North 5K to kick start the series of sporting events on the Friday evening to launch the weekend's sporting activities and make extra space on Saturday for the popular children's events. The 5km race will be the first event which marks the beginning of the 40 Edition Simplyhealth Great North Run 2020.
Open to everyone, the Great North 5K is often ran as a warm up in preparation for the half marathon or simply as a little bit of fun.
The event often sees some notable guests take part, including twice winner of the Great North Run and British Olympic Champion, Sir Mo Farrah and also Alex Geddes and Ian Graham – Mayors of Gateshead and Newcastle.
In a similar fashion to the Junior and Mini Great North Runs, the Great North 5K allows participants to take in the scenic views across both Newcastle and Gateshead quayside as they pass iconic landmarks such as Sage Gateshead.
The route itself starts on the Newcastle side of the quayside and quickly crosses over the Swing Bridge. From there, the running crowds will be directed west adjacent to the Tyne until they loop back and head towards the Sage. In order to reach the finish – which is on the Newcastle side – runners will be given the opportunity to cross Gateshead Millennium Bridge in the penultimate stage of the race.
One of the excellent features about the Great North 5K, is that it will help set the mood for the sporting weekend but still give you enough time to enjoy the rest of the events which are on the Saturday such as the Junior and Mini Great North Runs and the the Elite Men’s Mile & Elite Women’s Mile as part of the CityGames.
Whether you are looking to perfect your personal best or you simply want to have some fun with your friends and family and enjoy the Great North atmosphere, the Great North 5K caters to both.
There are still places available – don’t miss out on the chance to win your own t-shirt, goodie bag and medal!
