NE1 Summer in the City

Welcome back to Newcastle city centre and Newcastle Quayside this summer!

NE1’s Summer in the City is set to transform outdoor spaces across the city from July 1, giving you even more reasons to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Newcastle!
Take part in activities in the city centre, including the new 'Tiny Toon' play-village for children, as well as NE1's Screen on the Green outdoor cinema.

Head down to the Quayside, which will be buzzing with activity and colour all summer long! Discover new installations and events, from kayaking on the Tyne to the exciting new 'Dog on the Tyne' festival.

Screen on the Green

1st July – 1st September

The Summer in the City programme kicks off with the return of NE1’s Screen on the Green. This free open-air movie theatre at Old Eldon Square features more than 90 blockbuster films, family favourites, and sports coverage including Wimbledon, the F1 British Grand Prix, and the Tour de France. Enjoy Toddler Takeovers on Tuesdays, and special movie picks by Tyneside Cinema on Wednesdays.

Northern Pride’s 'Pride in the City'

5th July – 21st July (Various dates/times/venues)

NE1 partners with Northern Pride for an extended celebration across Newcastle city centre, featuring the signature Pride march and music festival, and a Mini Pride at NE1’s Screen on the Green.

Tiny Toon Miniature Play Village

Unveiling the new ‘Tiny Toon’ play village in Old Eldon Square, where children can engage in imaginative play with mini-versions of key Newcastle locations like a mini-Theatre Royal and a mini-Grainger Market.

Kayaking on the Tyne (SOLD OUT)

Saturday 10th August

Experience the thrill of kayaking with free 30-minute taster sessions on the River Tyne. Suitable for all skill levels, this activity promises fun and adventure on the water.

Outdoor Twilight Yoga and Fitness Classes

Join NE1 for invigorating fitness sessions on the Quayside. Enjoy new twilight yoga sessions that harmonize body and mind against the stunning backdrop of the Quayside. Dance City instructors will also host free salsa, Zumba, ballet, and other dance classes throughout the summer.

Weekend Takeovers

27th July and 31st August

Enjoy themed weekend takeover events at Wesley Square, featuring movie character appearances, live music, and fun activities for the whole family.

Red Bull Tyne Ride

Saturday 3rd August

Get ready for the world’s toughest head-to-head motorcycle race on Newcastle’s iconic Quayside. Watch top riders, including local hero Billy Bolt, compete in this thrilling free event.

NOVUM Newcastle Festival

8th – 11th August

Immerse yourself in art and culture at NOVUM Newcastle, featuring live performances, music, and family activities from local, national, and international artists.

Music by the Marina

Saturday 17th August

Enjoy a stellar lineup of local artists at this free music event organized by NE1 in collaboration with HMV Newcastle. Experience a variety of musical styles and genres, all for free.

Dog on the Tyne

Saturday 24th August

Celebrate International Dog Day with the inaugural 'Dog on the Tyne' festival. This canine-centric event features dog yoga, agility courses, and a dog-friendly walk along the Quayside.

NE1's Newcastle Restaurant Week

Indulge in NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week, featuring over 100 restaurants offering special deals and menus. It’s a food lover's paradise!

NE1’s Dragon Boat Race

Saturday 28th September

End the summer with the thrilling Dragon Boat Race on the River Tyne. Watch teams from local businesses compete in this exciting event.
