Cullercoats is a sandy bay enclosed by small piers, and is the perfect place to spend a family day out at the seaside. Having been awarded a Seaside Award, it is ideal for bathing as well as beach walks. It is conveniently situated between the popular coastal towns of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, making it the ideal stop off point. If you're feeling peckish when visiting Cullercoats Bay, you'll be spoiled for choice with fish and chips, a pub lunch, a coffee and cake or an ice cream all on the menu. The south of the bay is a launching area for local fishing boats and leisure craft, and Dove Marine Laboratory, on the bay itself, is an important research centre for Newcastle University's School of Marine Science. The Victorian RNLI Lifeboat Station is still active today.
