You are not short of places to get a cup of real coffee or brew on-the-go at independent cafes in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Whether you’re meeting a friend for a socially distanced walk, fancy starting the day with a flat white or just need a taste of normality – you will find a number of popular cafes and independent coffee shops in NewcastleGateshead now open for business.

Many cafes have adapted how they provide you with a caffeine fix and reopened with takeaway options to safely bring back a little normality. As is becoming standard practice, contactless payment is a must across the board and make sure to respect socially distant queuing at each venue. Not only are there some excellent cafes to grab and go, many coffee shops have an outdoor seating area to provide space for you to linger a while and enjoy a much-needed catch up or break from home (from 12 April 2021).

Here is our guide to cafes across Newcastle and Gateshead where you can grab a takeaway cuppa to go or sit outside from 12 April…

Takeaway coffees in Newcastle

  • 1901 Caffe Bistro, Manors and Jesmond - if you want a coffee from the ultimate takeaway cup, then head to 1901 (pictured).
  • Olive and Bean, Newcastle – online preorder for takeaways and outdoor seating from 12 April 2021. Recommended for cakes, snacks and treats too. 
  • Pink Lane Bakery, Newcastle – along the cobbled streets of Newcastle city centre, the local bakery serves up freshly ground coffee as well as other hot drinks, cakes, savoury pastries and fresh bread (8am - 4pm everyday except closed on Sundays).
  • Cake Stories, Jesmond - Operating a kerb-side-kiosk providing tea, coffee, scones, pastries and of course... cake to takeaway!
  • Naked Deli, Heaton & Newcastle (takeaway and collection), Gosforth (closed) – whether it's protein shakes, hot drinks or a healthy lunch, Naked Deli are running a click and collect service as well as delivery options for food, but if you're in the Heaton area - just drop in a grab a takeaway.
  • The Cycle Hub, Ouseburn – the ideal pit stop for cyclists, enjoy a takeaway coffee with stunning views along the Quayside. Loos are closed, card payment only.
  • Kiln Kiosk, Ouseburn - get down early to the Kiln's takeaway hatch to make sure you get a hot drink and croissant or tasty treat to takeaway. Check their social media for updates. There will be outdoor seating from 12 April.
  • Tyne Bar, Ouseburn - it's popular in the Ouseburn for a sunny stroll so it's best to be armed with a few suggestions! Tyne Bar are serving great coffee and hot drinks as well as snacks and treats to takeaway.
  • Aidan's Kitchen, Sandyford in Newcastle - offering takeaway cake and coffees as well as a limited brunch menu of 'Aidan's Favourites' as part of their click and collect service
  • Brew & Bite, Heaton - a small cafe with excellent kerb appeal! Queue outside as it's one-in-one out but grab a takeaway coffee or freshly baked bread, sandwiches and selection of treats.
  • Batch Bakery, Jesmond - another top coffee shop to grab a takeaway coffee, especially if you fancy a walk or a picnic in nearby Exhibition Park.
  • Estate Tea Co., Heaton - a brand new resident to Heaton Road, Estate Tea Co serve up takeaway hot drinks (Wednesdays - Sundays) and they will have outdoor seating from 12 April.
  • Fork in the Rose, Heaton - perfect for takeaway hot drinks and even a chance to buy a plant or fresh flowers!
  • Studio 28 Patisserie, Hoult's Yard, Ouseburn - tucked away at the back of Hoult's Yard, Studio 28 Patisserie serves up coffees to go and will have plenty of outdoor seating from 12 April for a coffee and a sit down (and a little chocolate or two!).

Takeaway coffees in Gateshead

  • Staiths Cafe, Gateshead – as well as using their handy app to pre-order, you can walk up to Staiths Café and grab a coffee or hot drink to takeaway. 
  • Stairwayz Cafe, Low Fell Gateshead - the independent cafe in Low Fell serve takeaway coffee, cake and lunches as well as Afternoon Tea takeaways and picnic boxes. 
  • Backyard Bike Shop, Gateshead Quayside – a hipster’s paradise on the Gateshead banks of the River Tyne – join the queue at Backyard Bike Shop and follow their social distancing protocol. It's worth it for a Matcha Latte or Chai Tea Latte on the go. They will remain open every day during the second Lockdown for takeaway coffee, cakes and sandwiches from 10am to 4pm.
  • Saltwell Park Cafe, Gateshead - the cafe at Saltwell Park are serving visitors out for a stroll with takeaway hot drinks and reduced lunch menu and treats.
