Join RGS Head of Climbing Gareth Dunn and RGS Head of Outdoor Education Wayne Dobson for some serious climbing time!
At RGS we are incredibly fortunate to house one of (if not the) largest school climbing wall in the UK. Our state-of-the-art facilities would rival any commercial climbing centre and cover climbing grades 4 to 7c (easy to super hard!). Climbing is a fantastic sport, which now exists at the professional level, and the Olympics (with Britain's own Toby Roberts being the men's Olympic gold medal winner from Paris 2024).
Climbing is not only great exercise (physically and mentally) but helps to develop resilience, problem solving skills (this requires quick, flexible, and creative thinking - skills) and a degree of responsibility for the safety of others in different situations (as well as your own!)
Our beginner / intermediate session is aimed at students aged Y7 upwards. These are a great chance to take your first steps in climbing (or to further your education is a longer, more individual programme than you've had the chance to do before) - whether it be to start working towards the Olympics in 2032, or just to try something outside your comfort zone.
These sessions will cover kit familiarisation, an introduction to basic climbing techniques; learning how to tie relevant knots; how to belay other climbers and key tips and checks for learning safely.
Age Range: Y7 upwards
Timings: 10am - 12:30pm
Drop off/Collection: RGS Main Reception on Eskdale Terrace.
Kit: RGS will provide all kit include shoes. Comfortable clothing including leggings and tracksuit bottoms can be worn. No baggy clothes or jewellery and long hair must be tied up.
Food & Drink: Please ensure you bring a water bottle and a snack. We operate a NO NUTS policy on site.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If your child is unable to attend a summer skills session, unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund. However, in some circumstances we may be able to offer a credit towards a future booking. Please email communications@rgs.newcastle.sch.uk if you have any questions.
