A magical new theatrical adventure is coming to the historic Common Room in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne! “Harper Thursday and the Magic Lantern,” Inspired by the timeless works of literary giants such as A.A. Milne, Frank L. Baum, Lewis Carroll, and J.M. Barrie, this enchanting production invites families to embark on a journey filled with wonder and imagination.
This brand new play featuring captivating songs by acclaimed writer and producer Craig Wilde and music by accomplished composer Paul G Clark, Directed by award-winning Director Jake Murray (Dickens by Candlelight - A Christmas Carol, OTHELLO, Frankenstein) will debut on July 17, 2025.
The Story: Join Harper, an 11-year-old newcomer to her school, who finds it difficult to make friends and seeks solace in her beloved books. While exploring the magical library of the Common Room, Harper meets the ghost of a chimney sweep living in the fireplace. Together, they uncover an old Magic Lantern and a box of slides depicting classic children’s stories, including characters like the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, The Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, and Piglet from Winnie the Pooh.
However, their excitement quickly turns when they accidentally break the slide of Baba Yaga, releasing the notorious witch who wants revenge for being trapped and threatens to spread nightmares across the land. Harper and her ghostly friend set off on a thrilling adventure through various story worlds, from Oz to Wonderland, the Hundred Acre Wood to Neverland to find the shattered pieces of the slide and banish Baba Yaga for good and save the world of dreams—learning important lessons about friendship, courage, and teamwork along the way.
