Between 1840 and 1920, businesses were founded or joined in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by 285 German and Scandinavian merchants. This talk will give an insight into the personal and business lives of these largely overlooked traders, examining the role they played amongst the Quaysiders of Newcastle in directing rapidly expanding international trade in the nineteenth century. It will examine a range of experiences, from bankruptcies, deportation and family feuds to innovative business developments conducted by a cohort amongst whom were millionaires, knights, Members of Parliament, frauds and smugglers.
