The Ship Inn, Ouseburn

The Ship Inn in Ouseburn has been a big plant-based player in NewcastleGateshead since 2016 and has steadily built an impressive reputation amongst locals. This quaint little pub is at the heart of the Ouseburn Valley, the creative quarter of the city and offers a fully vegan menu including vegetable curries, ‘fish’ and chips and burgers. Pull up a chair and enjoy delicious food while playing one of the many board games on offer. On a Sunday, enjoy your vegan Sunday lunch in front of a roaring fire in this traditional, relaxed pub. It’s worth noting that not all the alcohol served is vegan.

Karma Kitchen Café

Karma Kitchen Café is a vegan Indian restaurant in Newcastle’s Bigg Market which features a Punjabi-themed  menu and is takeaway onlu. Enjoy a choice of vegan wines, cocktails and specialist teas to wash down your meal. The Geordie mother and daughter duo behind Karma Kitchen Café first hit Newcastle’s foodie scene in 2018 when they offered tasty vegan takeaway food and have now grown to a full dine-in experience. Karma Kitchen is a firm favourite with locals who love plant-based Punjabi cuisine!

The Carriage, Jesmond

The Carriage is a vegan restaurant in Jesmond, Newcastle with character. It is the sister pub to The Ship Inn and certainly shares its impressive legacy. This cosy pub, which is also dog-friendly like The Ship Inn, serves a fully vegan menu along with a wide range of beers, wines and spirits. It even has a juke box!

Veganatomy, Hawker Market

Veganatomy is an Asian fusion spot where the sushi is 100% vegan. Being the first and only fully vegan sushi specialist in Newcastle, the spot is a must for those wanting to sample some delicious vegan food. Look out for Veganatomy at the Carriage in Jemsond where they do regular pop ups. The creative food, crafted by Zoë Newman has even bagged praise from Gordon Ramsey himself! It must be worth a try. 

Snackwallah, Grainger Market

Who knew central Newcastle was the place-to-go for delicious Indian street food? We did! Snackwallah serves vegan Indian street food, snacks and drinks in the stunning surroundings of historic indoor market, Grainger Market.

Vegano, Newcastle

Vegano is near to Discovery Museum and not far from St James’ Park in Newcastle and a great place to find a vegan brunch in Newcastle. Serving a variety of dishes from breakfast through to evening meals, Vegano offers a wide range of delicious, cruelty-free food in a modern and cosy setting. You can also catch them on the move with their food truck at the Quayside market every Sunday.

Journey Cafe Bar, Newcastle

Tucked away beside Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle is Journey Cafe Bar which serves up some of the best flavour-filled vegan and vegetarian dishes in the city. With a keen focus on locally-sourced and seasonal produce, Journey's menu is ever-changing but always well thought out and delicious!

  • Brinkburn Brewery in Ouseburn does a splendid vegan Sunday dinner with all the trimmings – tuck into a fresh and filling rainbow plate of flavour and colour.
  • Newcastle-based Super Natural Café and Sky Apple Café in nearby suburb, Heaton, are two pioneers of the fully vegetarian restaurant and both with extensive and applauded vegan options on their menus.
  • Visitors to pubs like Eye On The Tyne near the Newcastle Quayside will find that although the restaurant is not strictly a vegan restaurant, it has an impressive range of plant-based option as standard on its fully menu.
  • A feature of NewcastleGateshead Quayside Market on Sundays is Magpye 
  • If you have a sweet tooth, head to Glaze Donut in Grainger Market for a tasty range of vegan donuts.
