On the opposite banks of the River Tyne, Gateshead is gearing up to celebrate Pride in grand style for 2026. Taking place in June, recognised globally as Pride Month, the festival will create space for people to connect, be visible and celebrate together across our communities.
Organised by local charity Out North East, they will be hosting a variety of exciting events throughout the month as well as providing safe spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to celebrate. From arts and culture to wellbeing, learning and family-friendly activities, the festival will feel visible and inclusive, where everyone is welcome.
Whether you’re visiting for a day, a weekend or throughout the month, here’s an overview of what to expect from some of the key events:
With a mix of film screenings, discussions, and explorations of LGBTQIA+ history, these events will showcase powerful and thought-provoking work that highlights key issues within the LGBTQIA+ community.
Screaming Queens introduces viewers to street queens, cops and activist civil rights ministers who recall the riot and paint a vivid portrait of the wild transgender scene in 1960s San Francisco. Integrating the riot's story into the broader fabric of American life, the documentary connects the event to urban renewal, anti-war activism, civil rights and sexual liberation.
This powerful talk explores the current state of LGBTQI+ rights across different regions, unpacking the tensions between legal advancements, lived realities, and the rise of co-ordinated backlash. Why are rights expanding in some places while being rolled back in others? And what does this mean for the future of global equality?
The event will feature talks from Richard Bliss and Mwelwa Chilekwa, alongside stalls from local organisations and community creatives selling crafts and books, creating a vibrant space for connection, learning, and community engagement. You can also explore a unique exhibition showcasing nearly a millennium of LGBTQI+ stories from Tyneside, highlighting the resilience, creativity, activism, and lived experiences that have shaped the region’s history.
Make sure to book your tickets to these fantastic events.
