There are a number of brilliant and often independent vegan restaurants in Newcastle and Gateshead who serve a fully vegan menu as well as an ever-increasing variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants in the North East who have added creative vegan options to their menus.

Enjoying a vegan meal isn’t just for Veganuary so to make it easier for you to find the best vegan restaurants in Newcastle and Gateshead, we’ve created a list of our top 10 vegan places to eat.
Little Green Social café, bar and health food shop takes the top spot as a must-visit vegan restaurant found in Sandyford, Newcastle. The fully vegan venue is a hot spot with locals thanks to its delicious and varied menu offering plant-based favourites such as tasty tapas, all day breakfasts and Sunday dinners. Settle in for a vegan brunch in the chilled Newcastle suburb or book a group of mates for a vegan afternoon tea which includes a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked, raw cakes created by the onsite bakers. Little Green Social is a relatively new addition to Newcastle’s foodie scene but is also a hub of activity and the venue hosts regular events such as clothes swaps, themed food nights and quizzes.
The Ship Inn in Ouseburn has been a big plant-based player in NewcastleGateshead since 2016 and has steadily built an impressive reputation amongst locals. This quaint little pub is at the heart of the Ouseburn Valley, the creative quarter of the city and offers a fully vegan menu including vegetable curries, ‘fish’ and chips and burgers. Pull up a chair and enjoy delicious food while playing one of the many boardgames on offer. On a Sunday, enjoy your vegan Sunday lunch in front of a roaring fire in this traditional, relaxed pub. It’s worth noting that not all the alcohol served is vegan.
Soul Shack Vegan Grill is a pop-up in the heart of Newcastle city centre and is the perfect go-to for vegan fast food and tapas. Situated inside STACK Newcastle, a shipping container community made up of independent food, drink and retail stores, Soul Shack serves up fast food with a conscience in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.
Junk It Up restaurant and bar is another resident of STACK Newcastle and promises nothing less than vegan junk food with added attitude. Originally starting as a pop-up store on the outskirts of the city, Junk It Up has come on leaps and bounds and now serves firm favourites such as Southern Fried Fricken, chilli dogs and bourbon BBQ kebabs alongside a fully licensed bar at the centre of the city scene.
The Carriage is a vegan restaurant in Jesmond, Newcastle with character. It is the sister pub to The Ship Inn and certainly shares its impressive legacy. This cosy pub, which is also dog-friendly like The Ship Inn, serves a fully vegan menu along with a wide range of beers, wines and spirits. It even has a juke box!
Vegano is near to Discovery Museum and not far from St James’ Park in Newcastle and a great place to find a vegan brunch in Newcastle. Serving a variety of dishes from breakfast through to evening meals, Vegano offers a wide range of delicious, cruelty-free food in a modern and cosy setting. You can also catch them on the move with their food truck at the Quayside market every Sunday.
Karma Kitchen Café is a vegan Indian restaurant in Newcastle’s Bigg Market which features a Punjabi-themed daytime menu and an authentic curry and thali evening menu. Enjoy a choice of vegan wines, cocktails and specialist teas to wash down your meal. The Geordie mother and daughter duo behind Karma Kitchen Café first hit Newcastle’s foodie scene in 2018 when they offered tasty vegan takeaway food and have now grown to a full dine-in experience. Karma Kitchen is a firm favourite with locals who love plant-based Punjabi cuisine!
If you’re in need of a hummus hit, look no further than chickpea champions, Humpit. Serving freshly made pita pockets, falafels and hummus platters, Humpit vegan restaurant near Newcastle University is the perfect place for a vegan takeaway with a difference.
Who knew central Newcastle was the place-to-go for delicious Indian street food? We did! Snackwallah serves vegan Indian street food, snacks and drinks in the stunning surroundings of historic indoor market, Grainger Market.
In previous years there has even been a dedicated vegan restaurant week which was ran by local blogger Canny Foods. However, such is the rise in popularity of vegan dining, foodies can find a great range of vegan options and restaurants taking place in the NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week which takes place in January and August each year.
