Step inside one of the North East’s most iconic venues for a special behind-the-scenes experience as Newcastle Theatre Royal opens its doors to the public this April!
Taking place during the Easter holidays, this free Open Day invites curious visitors of all ages to explore the magic of theatre-making—from the spotlights and stage sets to the stories and stars.
Join expert-led tours of the historic auditorium and backstage areas (30 minutes, pre-book or queue on the day), or take part in interactive activities across the building. Budding performers can get stuck into an hour-long Adult Acting Workshop in the rehearsal room, while young creatives can dive into family-friendly craft stations to make masks, badges and tote bags.
Step into a fantasy world in the immersive ‘Fantasy Creatures’ experience, co-created by local school children and brought to life through sound, visuals and storytelling. For history lovers, discover the building’s rich past in a detailed one-hour talk complete with archive materials and a live Q&A.
You’ll also find a live Stage Management Demonstration showcasing the technical magic of lighting, sound and set-building, an egg hunt through the theatre, and live piano music in the Grand Circle Bar to soundtrack your day. Prefer a slower pace? Arrive from 9.30am for a more sensory-friendly environment.
Refreshments will be available throughout the day, including coffee and cake from 100 Grey Street’s in-house bar and treats from Pink Lane Bakery.
Don’t miss your chance to peek behind the curtain at Newcastle Theatre Royal’s Open Day 2025!
