International Zine Month

International Zine Month
Inspired by our current exhibitions by Frankie Raffles and Joanne Coates, we are celebrating this year’s International Zine Month with a photo-zine exhibition in Baltic Library and a series of inspiring artist-led, photo-zine events.

Photo-Zine Exhibition

A photo zine is usually a self-made, printed issue built of photos and captions, they often have an overarching theme, concept or story. We have a growing collection of self-published and independent photo-zines covering a wide range of interests in our Zine Library. For the whole month of July we will have a dedicated photo-zine in our Library that you can see every day we are open, Wednesday-Sunday. Take a visit, explore the zines and be inspired.

Mud Mapping | Artist Talk with Michele Allen
Sunday 14 July | 2pm
Free, drop in

Join Artist Michele Allen as she shares her new publication Mud Mapping which explores tidal mudflats on the River Tyne. Michele will talk about the process of translating photographic images into print, moving from her traditional darkroom techniques to printing on risograph to self-publish a handmade book in collaboration with Foundation Press.

Weather Wonders | A photo-zine-making workshop with Alex Hughes
Saturday 20 July | 10.30am - 12.30pm
Free, drop in

Join artist Alex Hughes for an exploration of our relationship to the weather through photography, collage and poetry. Thinking about the images we frequently take of the weather in different forms, from rainbows to cloud formations, will inspire the creation of a poetic zine to engender the imagination on how we both affect and are affected by the natural elements surrounding our environment.

Untold Stories | A photo-zine-making workshop with Mack Sproates
Saturday 27 July | 10.30am - 12.30pm
Free, drop in

Join artist and zine maker Mack Sproates for a creative zine-making session, exploring untold stories, character making, poetry and creative writing inspired by our own photography and photos we love. Zines are a great way to share stories, and advocate for the things that matter to us. Bring along a photo (digital or printed) that you love or you think might be interesting to explore in a zine.
