In The Beginning Woman Was The Sun
A surreal, witty quest to find historys iconic Japanese women.

What happens when you grow up with heroes that look nothing like you? And what happens when you find some that do? Join Houmi on her odyssey to find new heroes in this surreal and witty show that celebrates centuries of iconic, badass, Japanese women.

Houmis bedroom is plastered with posters of her childhood heroes. From Marilyn to Mel B, Tudor Queens to the Spice Girls, these are the women shes spent her whole life unquestioningly adoring. As she gazes on their faces, the penny drops: none of them look like her. Houmi realises shes never tried to seek out heroes that share her heritage. Thus begins the quest of all quests, where we meet an 11th Century samurai, two powerhouse suffragettes and a legendary queen. And best of all, its literally, totally autobiographical. Well...

Sort of.

In The Beginning Woman Was The Sun is Houmi Miuras debut one woman show, supported by HOME, Unity, Arts Council England, New Earth Theatre and Horizons Collective.
