In conversation with Joanna Pocock
Join us for a special evening with award-winning writer Joanna Pocock to celebrate the launch of her new book, Greyhound , published byFitzcarraldo Editions.

Hosted in collaboration between Opt Indie Books and Everyman Newcastle, this one-off event blends literature and film, opening with a screening of the short film Down Liberty Road (1956) followed by a live conversation with Joanna about the making of Greyhound , her journey across an ever-shifting America, and what it means to write from the edges of landscape and grief.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

In 2006, in the wake of several miscarriages, Joanna Pocock travelled by Greyhound bus across the US from Detroit to Los Angeles. Seventeen years later, now in her 50s, she undertakes the same journey, revisiting the cities, edgelands and highways she passed through before. Greyhound traces this return to the road, intertwining memoir, environmental writing, reportage and literary history. As she navigates two very different Americas - an earlier, less atomised one, and a present caught in ecological and economic crisis - Pocock explores the overlap of place and memory, the individual and the communal, and the environmental cost of contemporary life.

Already drawing acclaim from writers including Jonathan Lethem, Cal Flyn, and Xiaolu Guo, Greyhound is a powerful and immersive meditation on travel, loss, and the stories we carry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Joanna Pocock is an Irish-Canadian writer based in London. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, and The Guardian US, and she is a contributing editor at the Dark Mountain Project. Her first book, Surrender , won the Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize and marked her out as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary environmental writing. In 2021, she was awarded the Arts Foundations Environmental Writing Fellowship. Greyhound is her second book.
