Grate Cheese Festival
Jesmond cheesemonger grate brings Britain and Ireland's best cheesemakers to Newcastle for a one-day celebration, hosted by Award Winning Cheesemonger Moz Murphy and MC’d by international cheese judge Carlos Yescas

Newcastle is getting its first ever cheese festival this autumn, as independent Jesmond cheesemonger grate marks its sixth birthday with a day dedicated entirely to the good stuff.

grate cheese fest takes place on Sunday 4 October at Summerhill Bowling Club, Winchester Terrace, from 10am to 3pm. Tickets are £5 per person and must be booked in advance through Eventbrite.

The festival brings cheesemakers from across Britain and Ireland to Newcastle to meet the people who eat their cheese. Visitors will be able to talk to the makers behind well known names including Baron Bigod, Blackmount, Doddington and Shepherd's Purse, hear about the history and craft behind each cheese, and learn how it is actually made. Local producers taking part include Newcastle Cocktail Kitchen, Northumbrian Pantry and Belly of the Beast.

Cheesemakers rarely sell directly to the public, so the day is a chance to hear from them in person and then buy their cheese from grate, who will be selling on the day.

Grate is an award-winning, women-led independent business on Jesmond Road, selling British and Irish cheese from a shop at the heart of the community and it celebrates its sixth birthday this year.

Moz Murphy, owner of grate, said: "The best part of running a cheese shop is watching someone try something they were sure they wouldn't like. This is a whole day of that, and a chance to meet the people who actually make the cheese we sell."

MC for the festival is Carlos Yescas, international cheese judge and co-author of One Cheese to Rule Them All. He will interview the makers throughout the day and sign copies of his book. On the event, Carlos said: “The North East has never had an event like this, where multiple award winning cheesemakers are sampling their products and sharing their personal stories under one roof. I am so excited to welcome them to Newcastle and introduce them to the turophiles of the city and region.

I hope people come join us and take an opportunity to learn more about exceptional cheese made in the British isles. Grate’s Cheese Fest will be remembered as the cheesiest event (pun intended), thanks to Moz’s visionary idea to open a cheese shop 6 years ago.”
