Local historian, Luan Hanratty, will be giving an informative talk about the history of South Shields:
How did Arbeia maintain its significance in the area following the departure of the Romans in the early fifth century? In this talk, Luan will explore the Early Medieval context of the fort alongside the politics and figures that shaped the region in this turbulent and fascinating period. In addition, he will examine possible meanings of the site's two ancient names: 'Arbeia' and 'Caer Urfa', names which continue to puzzle historians today.

The talk will take place at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery on Wednesday 2nd September 2026 at 2pm.
