The Customs House presents Our Freedom on 9 May in Hebburn Town Centre; a walking performance & community event honouring UK and South Tyneside veterans and VE/VJ day. Created by artists Rob Anderson & Andrew Dawson, this outdoor performance will feature professional dancers and actors, celebrating true local stories through movement & spoken word. The stories you'll hear along the way have been collated thanks to the valuable contributions from members of NAAFI Break, Veterans for Veterans in Care and John Hambling, material from Cllr Ken Dawes and the Mission for Seamen.
The stories will be ‘living memorials’ told with movement, and the spoken word, and audiences will walk to five locations, including with performances at 11.00am and 2:00pm, each lasting 30 minutes. Rooted in local memory and history, Our Freedom is a calm, reflective tribute shaped by and for the people of South Tyneside.
Attendees should meet outside The Iona Club, Hebburn.
This project is supported through Arts Council’s Place Partnership with South Tyneside Cultural Partnership, and was originally created through Future Arts Centre’s Our Freedom: Then and Now programme. This programme was delivered in partnership with Libraries Connected and Open Eye Gallery, supported using public funding by UK Government through Arts Council England.
Please Note: The piece including sensitive content relating to the experience of veterans & the performance will include smoke flares.
