Say Portugal and you might think about golf, surfing, the Algarve and Ronaldo! But Europe’s most westerly point and oldest nation (dating back to 1139) was a super-power of maritime explorers so no surprise its cuisine relies heavily on seafood such as grilled octopus, seafood rice and grilled sardines as well as the ubiquitous bacalhau salt cod of which they still get through 25,000 tonnes annually! Nando’s was inspired by Portuguese cuisine – especially its piri-piri chicken – but our favourite isn’t this, or their deliciously-sticky-sweet Port with queso, but will always be the delightful Pastel de nata custard tarts!
