With so many great restaurants to choose from, it’s almost impossible to narrow down which type of cuisine to opt for, though for many, Italian always wins!
You’ll be pleased to know that NewcastleGateshead is home to some of the best Italian restaurants in the North East. From fresh pasta dishes, Italian tapas and delicious fresh-baked pizza; if you're looking for a great Italian restaurant in NewcastleGateshead, you’ll find plenty to sink your teeth into in our list!
Opened in 1983, this family-run Italian restaurant is one of the best known in NewcastleGateshead. Situated in the heart of Jesmond, low lighting, muted music and authentic dishes make Francesca's a rustic restaurant where you are guaranteed a genuine Italian experience.
With charming atmosphere and family friendly hosting, this Jesmond restaurant is usually packed out every night with loyal local customers and fresh faces tucking into hearty home-made Italian meals. Be sure to book in advance, as tables can fill up fast, but there is no denying it will be worth it.
Opened in 1995 by two Sardinian brothers, Pani's has left its stamp on the NewcastleGateshead culinary scene to become one of the city's favourite Italian restaurants. Located in the heart of the city centre, what makes Pani's so special is its slightly different approach to Italian cuisine, which instead takes its influences from Sardinia. Here you’ll find new and interesting Mediterranean inspired dishes that you won’t find elsewhere in the city.
Choose from tapas style platters, unique pasta medley’s and robust salads full of flavour which use classic Italian ingredients for a taste of Italy with a twist! Throw in some good service (including Geordie-Italian accents), beautiful décor, a truly relaxed continental atmosphere and you're onto a winner.
Located at The Side, on Newcastle's Quayside, Prima has a fantastic reputation for amazing, freshly made pizzas and Italian dishes. This spacious three floor restaurant features original stone walls and most notably, a beautiful stone arch, which provides an authentic atmosphere which will instantly transport you to the shores of Sicily or the quaint eateries of Naples.
Perfect for larger parties or celebratory meals thanks to its three function rooms that can seat anywhere between 20 to 120 people, Prima is a great choice for a special occasion; Italian style!
Opening over twenty years ago, Sabatini continues to bring truly authentic Italian food to hungry guests. Overlooking the iconic Quayside, on the Newcastle side of the Tyne; Sabatini’s lives up to its reputation for bringing delicious and authentic Italian cuisine to the North East, with a Sardinian flair! This family run restaurant offers a cosy yet modern setting that reflects its elegant and refined cuisine, including bistro style dining, wallet-friendly lunch menus and an extensive wine list!
Whether you pluck for a delicious plate of antipasti, a basket of bruschetta or aromatic fish and meat dishes, you’ll be sure to get your fill at Sabatini’s. Split into two rooms, why not choose from the classic ristorante? Or, if you prefer something low-key, you can enjoy the relaxed lounge which serves cocktails and snacks around comfy sofas and a warm fire.
If you’re keen for a quieter dining experience outside of the city, Adrianos Italian Restaurant and Deli in Gosforth is the place for you. Housed behind Gosforth High Street, this Sardinian influenced Italian restaurant is the perfect place to grab lunch or an evening meal. Serving up classic Italian dishes and tapas using all fresh and authentic ingredients – many of which you can pick up at the accompanying deli – the best bit about Adriano’s is the outdoor courtyard which is perfect suntrap in summer for dining alfresco.
Finish your evening with a refreshing glass of Aperol or Italian wine, and try out the creamy gelato pudding for a true taste of Italy!
