The Hatton Gallery is pleased to present 'Some Kind of Love: Actions and Reactions to Living on a Damaged Planet', a solo exhibition by award winning artist Uta Kögelsberger.
Through a series of interconnected works spanning video, sound and installation, the exhibition continues Kogelsberger’s sustained investigation of the complex relationships between human and ecological systems in a time of environmental change. It brings together, for the first time, four major bodies of new and existing works that navigate the tensions between destruction and nurture, fragility and resilience, loss and regeneration.
Artworks include 'Fire Complex' (2020–22), a body of works that follows the clear-up process that took place in the aftermath of California’s 2020 Castle Fire, which destroyed 14% of the world’s Giant Sequoia population.
'Forest Complex' (2023–24) examines the pressures Alpine forests face in the wake of the climate emergency, including bark beetle infestations and extreme weather events.
'Off Road' (2008–2014) explores the concept of freedom in the American West through the example of a State Vehicular Recreation area and its surrounding community.
'Forest Choir' (2025), a new piece created in collaboration with the Brussels Opera Youth Choir, draws on research that claims that music can accelerate plant growth and strengthen their immune systems.
Uta Kögelsberger is a German/British artist born in Belgium and based in London. Her work has been exhibited by leading national and international institutions including the LACMA, Los Angeles, MoMus, Thessaloniki, RA Galleries, London, Vincent Price Museum, Los Angeles, Millard Sheets Arts Centre, Ponoma, Brighton Photo Biennial, Brighton, Art Night, London in collaboration with Whitechapel Art Galleries, amongst others. It is held in public and private collections including the MFAH, Houston and LACMA, Los Angeles. Kögelsberger has been awarded the prestigious Royal Academy Wollaston Award.
