Newcastle Choral Society - Spring 2025 Concert
This concert, our last with Mark Anyan as Musical Director, features two contrasting sacred works. Yet for all their differences they share several points in common.

We begin with Fauré's Requiem. The calm serenity of this work reflects its composer's view of death as a pleasant release from life rather than an awesome experience to be dreaded. It therefore avoids the dramatic, fearsome effects of other composers' settings. Furthermore, Fauré omits some of the authorised text and adds other words to emphasise his personal feelings. The result is perhaps the most beautiful of all sacred choral works and it remains one of the favourite pieces in the repertoire of choirs throughout the world.

John Rutter is one of the most performed choral composers of the present time. Like Fauré, he chose a Latin sacred text with his Magnificat. This is Mary's address to her cousin Elizabeth as told in the Gospel according to St. Luke. Here Mary extols God's works as she acknowledges having been chosen to bear His child. In keeping with this joyful passage, Rutter's setting is full of stirring, lively music, quite different in mood from the serene Fauré work. However, like Fauré, Rutter has adapted the original wording by including text which emphasises the focus on Mary while omitting other parts of St Luke's version.

These two outstanding works with their contrasting and absorbing moods make for a thoroughly rewarding musical experience which we are sure you will enjoy. We look forward to seeing you.
