Between the Salt and The Ash is a writer's quest to understand the deep past and uncertain future of his homeland.
After inheriting the miner's safety lamp that belonged to his great-grandfather, Jake Morris-Campbell embarks on a pilgrimage across the North East, travelling from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral. Along the way, he reflects on the regions deep history, from its role as a hub of early Christian Britain to its later identity shaped by industry and class, and how it now faces an uncertain future.
Jake is joined throughout his journey by North East artists, poets, musicians, and friends, who contribute their unique perspectives and voices to his exploration of the region. Through his Camino of the North, Jake examines shifting notions of individual and regional identity across thirteen hundred years of social change, while reconsidering his own calling as a writer. Rejecting the damaging trope of 'left behind' communities, he uncovers neglected seams of culture and history and offers a heartfelt celebration of the place he calls hyem.
