An Audience with Carl Austin Behan OBE Gateshead Pride Event NG

Join Out North East for an inspiring evening of conversation with Dr Carl Austin-Behan OBE DL at HMS Calliope in Gateshead, marking 25 years since the ban on LGBTQ+ people serving in the armed forces was lifted.

A proud advocate and decorated former RAF serviceman, Carl Austin-Behan was discharged in 1997 simply for being gay – a moment that would go on to shape his life’s work in championing LGBTQ+ equality, mental health, and inclusion. Since then, he’s been crowned Mr Gay UK, served as the first openly gay Lord Mayor of Manchester, and become a driving force behind Fighting with Pride – the UK’s only LGBTQ+ veterans charity.

During this special event, Carl will reflect on his remarkable journey from the military to activism, and his work supporting the veterans who were historically dismissed or dishonourably discharged due to their sexuality or gender identity.

Out North East will also be on hand with resources for LGBTQ+ veterans, including information on the UK government’s financial reparations scheme and how to apply before the deadline in December 2026.

This free talk is a powerful and personal opportunity to hear from one of the UK’s most influential LGBTQ+ voices and learn more about the movement for justice and recognition.
