The Studio as a Site of Play; the World in Miniature - Laing Art Gallery

In this illustrated talk the artist Paul Coldwell will explore the use of models and miniaturisation in his work. These take the form of resolved sculptures as well as providing the starting point for prints, most recently woodcuts from laser cut woodblocks. Within the talk he will discuss the role of the studio and his relationship to particular artists including Thomas Bewick, Philip Guston, Alberto Giacometti and Giorgio Morandi.

Paul Coldwell is an artist and academic. He is Emeritus Professor in Fine Art at the University of the Arts, London. His latest book, Ink, Paper, Chisel, Grain , will be published in Spring 2026.

Laing Art Gallery function room, Wednesday 11 February 2026, 1-2pm. The talk will last for approximately 45 minutes, with time afterwards for questions.
