Buckle up - 2022 is going to be a packed year in NewcastleGateshead with excellent events spanning the full 12-months. Major sporting tournaments will get your heart racing, memory-making cultural moments will bring you and your friends and family together and a chance to dive into the furthest reaching North East history will cause you to reflect on the rich and varied heritage of our region.
Hadrian's Wall 1900 is the first event to get out of the blocks. The year-long cultural festival, which launches on Hadrian's birthday on 24 January, marks the 1900th anniversary of when Hadrian's Wall was built.
Take part in guided tours, talks and family-friendly activities; discover the urban home of the iconic landmark here in Newcastle at museums like Segedunum and Great North Museum: Hancock before heading out into the glorious Northumberland countryside to walk beside Hadrian's Wall and join communities who live there for a festival of events.
Between Saturday 29 January and Sunday 3 April, go in search of twenty iconic Morph sculptures dotted around the coastal towns and local high streets of North Tyneside. Morph's Epic Art Trail is a great chance to get the kids out and about whilst trying to tick off all the individually-designed Morphs on this outdoor trail.
Explore the mystery of Under the Stars in February and March. The new free event series, which will run over three weekends and culminate in a spectacular four-night festival finale, will bring magic to visitors of all ages at locations across the region and end in Newcastle City Centre. North of the Tyne, Under the Stars will weave a new fable for the region and explore local storytelling with the help of spectacular, large scale projection, atmospheric imagery, sound and fire to capture the character, beauty and diversity of this region. With events taking place throughout the neighbourhoods of Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside - get ready to ignite your imagination this winter.
North East culture, heritage and art are at the forefront of this year's collective event programme. The historic manuscript Lindisfarne Gospels return to Newcastle in September where it will go on display at Laing Art Gallery. An accompanying 'Inspired By' programme of events will punctuate the year and include exhibitions at Newcastle City Library and Newcastle Cathedral as well as a charming installation across Northumberland called Illuminated Sheep. Explore themes that are present in the Gospels including light, spirituality, community, pilgrimage, art and history.
The thrill of nail-biting sport roars back into NewcastleGateshead in 2022. The hotly-anticipated Rugby League World Cup FINALLY makes its debut at St James' Park in October. Be part of the crowd at the spectacular opening ceremony before taking in the action at one of four world-class matches played across the month.
The likes of Magic Weekend, Northumberland Plate Day at Newcastle Racecourse and Great North Run 2022 give spectators and have-a-go athletes another chance to experience live sport in Newcastle this year.
