Simplyhealth Great North Run 2021

Organisers have confirmed the 2020 Great North Run has been cancelled, due to the ongoing public health crisis caused by Coronavirus.

  • The UK’s biggest running event will now celebrate its landmark 40th staging next year.
  • Runners who had a place in the 2020 event will be given the option to roll it over to the next Great North Run, currently scheduled for Sunday 12 September 2021, or get a refund of their entry fee.
  • The Junior & Mini Great North Run and the Great North 5K , which traditionally take place on the Saturday before the Great North Run, have also been cancelled.
  • Places for the popular children’s event are always in high demand, so those who successfully secured a place in 2020 will be given a priority entry window in 2021 to make sure they don’t miss out.

The Simplyhealth Great North Run is the world’s largest half marathon. It has become an iconic feature of NewcastleGateshead’s cultural and sporting programme and welcomes 52,000 runners to the North East from all over the world.

Starting in Newcastle upon Tyne the 13.1 mile route takes runners through the city centre towards the River Tyne where thousands of people will cross over the iconic Tyne Bridge, where if you're lucky, you might get a glimpse of the Red Arrows passing overhead.

From there, runners will travel through Gateshead while being entertained by many bands on the run. The route, lined by thousands of supporters, leads runners to South Shields where at the top of Prince Edward Road the view of the sea is one of the most welcoming sights along the whole course.

From that point there is just over a mile to go and the crowds get louder as runners make their way down the final straight towards the finish gantry.

Fill the streets of Tyneside to watch the event on Sunday 8 September and soak up the inspiring atmosphere. The event will also be broadcast live on the BBC.

Junior and Mini North Run: The extremely popular children’s programme will take place the day before the iconic half marathon on Saturday 7 September 2019. Entries are now closed.

Great North 5K: The perfect way to kick off the biggest sporting weekend in the North East. Runners start on the Newcastle side of the River Tyne and follow the Quayside route over the Swing Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Taking place on Saturday 7 September and suitable for ages 14 and over. Entries for this race are still open.

The 2019 Simplyhealth Great North Run general entry ballot is now closed. Check back for information on taking part in 2020!
