Sanctified with Blood: Conflict and Violence in the Age of the Crusades

Sanctified with Blood: Conflict and Violence in the Age of the Crusades
This one hour talk will explore the bloodthirsty and turbulent age of the crusades.

Why did the crusades happen? Was it as bloody and violent as we think? The age of the crusades began with the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 and started hundreds of years of conflict, which we still feel the effects of today. In this one hour talk, we will look at the conflict in the Holy Land, the most famous region of the crusades, and determine the true extent of the conflict and violence from both sides. Was this a truly ruthless series of conflicts, or was our understanding shaped by political and religious motives?

Corey Lyddon-Hayes is a trained teacher of history working in museums. Corey has studied the medieval period for many years with a particular interest in castles and the crusades.
