Local fiddle duo Sam Baxter and Merle Harbron are joined by Norwegian/Swedish fiddle duo Astrid Garmo and Ester Thunander for a very special night of fiddle music from our respective homelands.
Sam Baxter and Merle Harbron
Anglo-Scottish fiddle duo 'Sam Baxter and Merle Harbron' weave together contrapuntal musical lines inspired and improvised from traditional songs and dance music; creating contemporary, nuanced and minimalistic arrangements. They draw their inspiration from raw traditional material; the field-recordings of tradition bearers and the old tune manuscripts of musicians long dead.
Astrid Garmo and Ester Thunander
Ester og Astrid is a duo project with fiddle players Ester Thunander and Astrid Garmo who started playing together in 2018 when they both attended the Norwegian Academy of Music. With a shared appreciation for vigorous and varied traditional fiddle playing, Astrid and Ester have come up with an explosive mixture from their homeland's of Norway and Sweden. Traditional Scandinavian folk tunes such as Springleik, Polska, Gangar and Springar along with their own compositions are performed with sky-high energy! The tunes are played in rich and raw arrangements with the use of fiddles, hardanger-fiddles and song. Mixtures between Norwegian folk music with Swedish second-voice tradition, in combination with the improvisational possibilities within traditional tunes.
