Novum is a multi-art festival transforming Newcastle Civic Centre into a live music venue for the first time from August 11-13 with free daily experiences on offer including music events and hands-on workshops led by artists. The Civic Centre and its surrounding gardens will become a 'cultural playground' filled with activities, performances and installations.
A Monumental Construction
The focal point will be what's described as an 'architectural marvel': a sculpture designed by French artist Olivier Grossetête.
The sculpture, called Monumental Construction, actually will be built by local people, with communities taking part in a series of open-to-all workshops - running in the days leading up to the festival - where they will construct it from recyclable cardboard. Aiming to be a celebratory but temporary monument to the city, it will also act as a focus for performances.
Free Family Workshops
Free activities available throughout the weekend will include ‘Stay and Play’ - hands-on, creative workshops delivered by artists, as well as community-led performances that cater to art enthusiasts, music fans, families and children alike. Local favourites CHALK, Curious Arts, Tyne & Wear Museums & Archives, Bare Toed Dance Company, and Northern Print will be accompanied by outstanding music from Sage Summer Studios and International visiting artists.
Incredible Live Music
The festival will take over the heart of Newcastle’s Civic Centre to create a people’s party. Unforgettable live experiences will blend International connections and UK voices. Including boundary crossing performer Mim Suleiman with Hannabiell & Midnight Blue. Iceland's most exciting new performer Gugusar joins the fashion world’s favourite DJ Lou Hayter while the bold electronic sounds of the Faroe Islands' ORKA lead an exploration into contemporary clubland.
