Suitable for all ages. Free, drop-in (no booking required).
Meet three fascinating 14th-century characters visiting us from Newcastle Castle’s re-enactment and living history group, the Newcastle Array.
The Soldier
Lying in the Cathedral is the stone statue of an Unknown Knight. Our own knight will be on hand to let you handle weapons and try on the armour. Knight School will take place on the Cathedral’s eastern terrace at 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm and 3pm, for anyone wishing to try their hand at medieval combat.
The Scribe
Have a go at writing or drawing with quill pens and be shown examples from medieval bestiaries: illuminated manuscripts that were filled with real and mythical beasts.
The Storyteller
Listen to centuries-old stories of wyrms and dragons, including St George and the Dragon (depicted twice in the Cathedral) and the local legend of The Lambton Worm.
This event forms part of our ‘Brilliant Beasts’ season, which takes place across summer 2022 at Newcastle Cathedral.
