Caedmon Choir Palace of Fun
Caedmon Choir is a friendly, welcoming community choir with around 80 members, which is based in Gateshead. Caedmon was formed in 1987 and originally rehearsed at Caedmon Hall in Gateshead Library, until 2005 when rehearsals moved to Sage Gateshead. Following the Covid pandemic we began rehearsing at St Joseph’s Church Hall in Central Gateshead. We have decided to open our doors and welcome the wider Gateshead community to a Fun Palaces event to be held at the church hall on Sunday 8th October 2023 from 2.00pm - 5.00pm.

Fun Palaces is an annual nationwide event which has been held in early October, for the last 10 years. It is an event which celebrates local community culture and skills, where individuals and local community groups can get together and share their talents, interests and opinions. At its heart is the message of community engagement.

Caedmon choir is a non-auditioned choir, we come together to sing for the enjoyment of it, and learn our songs by ear. At our Fun Palace event our musical director Eleanor Mooney will host a couple of singing workshops. Anyone can take part and experience how much fun singing with Eleanor can be. At the end of the afternoon Caedmon Choir will perform a few songs and workshop participants can choose to join in with this short performance. It is not compulsory though so no pressure.

Caedmon Choir members have many varied abilities other than singing, and included in the event will be Emily’s Belly Dancing workshop, so flex those hips and come along, and yes men are also welcome to join in. (no harem pants required).

We will also have stalls where people can try out and discover about a variety of craft skills. Included will be opportunities to come along and find out about pottery; learn knitting and crochet skills, or if you are an experienced knitter, you can share your talents; tackle some simple origami; learn gardening skills; have a go at the Human Fruit Machine Game (there will be prizes).

There will be a cake stall where you may buy fresh homemade produce, and refreshments will also be available so you can sit and chat over a cup of tea,

Every two years Caedmon Choir selects a couple of local charities to support. Our current chosen charities are CureUsher, and The Comfrey Project, each one is based in Gateshead. Both of our charities are keen to join in with our Fun Palace, and will have their own stalls.

Fun Palaces is an opportunity to emphasise the importance of community engagement and collaboration.
