Each January, we take a look ahead to the upcoming event highlights for the following year and provide you with plenty of reasons to visit NewcastleGateshead. This year feels exciting and tentative in equal measure... but all the same, welcome to 2022!
As we slam the door on 2021, we are going to tenaciously shout about the events which will take place across the next 12 months. We love having things to look forward to, now more than ever, so we have collated a guide of things to do in NewcastleGateshead during 2022. There are also some "Happy Anniversaries" needed for 2022, with a certain iconic Wall chalking up an eye-watering 1900 years, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art marking its 20th year and Newcastle's beloved Fenwick department store celebrating 140 years too.

Hadrian's Wall 1900 Festival will take place from 24 January - 23 December 2022 and is a year-long programme of events to celebrate the 1900th anniversary since the historic World Heritage Site was first built. From large-scale installations to the hidden gems in local communities, Hadrian's Wall 1900 is embracing the rich heritage and culture along the wall from Newcastle to Cumbria, and the many ways we can connect with one of the world’s most loved heritage sites. The return of the ancient artefact Lindisfarne Gospels to the North East, forms one of the major cultural highlights in NewcastleGateshead in 2022. Going on display at Newcastle's city-centre Laing Art Gallery, the Lindisfarne Gospels will be open at St John's gospel and available for visitors to marvel and peruse from 17 September - 3 December 2022. An expansive and varied 'Inspired By' programme of events, talks, walking tours, community projects and workshops will run alongside the Newcastle-based showcase of the manuscript and explore the central themes present in the Gospels from pilgrimage, spirituality, history, art and community. Yes - exactly what it says on the tin! Go in search of fabulous Illuminated Sheep which will be scattered across the Northumberland countryside. Follow a series of trails through Northumberland - either on foot, bike or bus - to find all 40 of the sheep which will be at heritage or visitor attraction sites, others will be more hidden in less expected urban, semi-rural and rural locations. The life-size sheep sculptures have been created by renowned digital and light artist Deepa Mann-Kler Part of the Lindisfarne Gospels 'Inspired By' programme, the modern-day pilgrimage to discover the Illuminated Sheep will also highlight the landscape, culture, communities and heritage of surrounding Northumberland.
Be swept away with a brand-new story for the region in a truly imaginative, after-dark event for all ages. North of Tyne, Under the Stars is a series of free evening events that will take place at outdoor locations across Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Families are invited to meet the Story Weaver who will be creating a new story for our region based on local folktales, mythology and fictional characters and expressed through immersive storytelling, light projections, fire and atmospheric soundscapes. The innovative, cultural event series will culminate in a Festival Finale in Newcastle city centre from Thursday 10 - Sunday 13 March 2022.
You might be getting waves of deja vu with the mention of UK Pride taking place in Newcastle BUT after two postponed years, we are FINALLY delighted to be host city for the 2022 UK Pride event. Visitors and locals alike are welcome to take part in a festival weekend of events at Newcastle’s Town Moor (22-24 July) as well as a series of activity designed to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Newcastle’s UK Pride promises to be the biggest UK Pride to date with rainbow colours taking over the city to welcome LGBTQ+ audiences from around the UK and beyond.
We are so excited to be able to welcome world-class sport to Newcastle in 2022 with the staging of postponed championship - the Rugby League World Cup 2021. Newcastle's iconic St James' Park will be the host for the men’s opening event when England take on Samoa as well as the spectacular opening ceremony. Further matches will then take place at Kingston Park (home of Newcastle Falcons and Newcastle Thunder). Choose from four matches hosted in Newcastle from Saturday 15 October – Saturday 29 October 2022. The party will be in full swing throughout the sporting event too with additional events, cultural activities and fun going on for everyone.
The world-famous Great North Run half-marathon will be back in September and fans of the race will be pleased to hear it returns to its traditional point-to-point route - starting in Newcastle and ending on South Shields' coastline. The Great North Run ballot typically opens in early January so if you're keen - throw your name into the hat - we'll be rooting for you!
Newcastle will be one of only 4 UK cities to host the Tour de Moon festival next year which has been created by Unboxed Creativity in the UK. Get ready for a fully immersive, lunar experience! This summer - Tour de Moon will journey to Newcastle as part of its two-month festival of performances, installations, interactive experiments and immersive experiences. The events will be created by a galaxy of nightlife artists, musicians, digital dreamers, writers, scientists, technologists and creative pioneers aged 18-25. There will be universe of creativity, imaginative, thinking and pondering to be done at this outer-of-this-world festival.
It wouldn't be the summer in Newcastle without the roar of Magic Weekend! The showpiece rugby league tournament promises to give you a sporting weekend of unforgettable entertainment once again. Be part of the action in 2022 when Magic Weekend smashes back into St James' Park stadium for before soaking up the electric atmosphere in the toon.
It's BACK! The Late Shows make a very welcome return in May with two nights of after-hours culture, creativity and discovery. The high-brow crawl around Ouseburn, Newcastle and Gateshead tends to include a chance to nosy round artist studios, take part in creative activities, explore some of the city's favourite cultural venues and experience vibrant performances. The full programme will be announced closer to the event but get it in your diary and visit us for a lively evening of creativity.
Something a bit different from CBK Adventures launches this January - and it's not for the faint hearted! Experience the invigorating (!) cold waters of the North Sea at the Ice Dip Social. The brand new event combines cold water swimming with a therapeutic Finnish tent sauna and a group relaxation space. You're invited to (quite literally) chill out and enjoy a delicious locally-sourced lunch cooked over an open flame. All of this comes together to create a unique day at the beach in winter, exclusively available to small private groups. Cycles of cold-water immersion and heat therapy provide a further boost to wellbeing for the group.
The pop superstar and man of the moment, Ed Sheeran will be lighting up Sunderland Stadium of Light for three consecutive dates when he brings his new Mathematics Tour to the North East. Spend your Bank Holiday weekend in the North East and experience live music from Ed Sheeran before experiencing all there is to offer in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland.
That is not all - 2022 is the year of live music on a mega scale! Hot from her performance in the 'Legends' slot at Glastonbury 2022, global superstar Diana Ross will bring her sparkle to headline The Riverside in Durham on Wednesday 29 June 2022. The music icon is one of the most successful recording artists and entertainers of all time and has shaped the sound of popular music. Returning for 2022, the Mouth of the Tyne Festival warms up the seaside town of Tynemouth with the perfect summer music festival packed with spectacular live music at Tynemouth Priory & Castle, special shows at Playhouse Whitley Bay, arts activities at Tynemouth Station and free street entertainment. Only the date has been announced so far - so keep an eye out for more information.
The popular Noughty 90s festival returns to Leazes Park in Newcastle city centre. Boasting four huge stages of music, the biggest 00s and 90s bands, artists and DJs from around the world, funfair rides, a 90s arcade, retro bars, an RnB roller disco, street food and more, this is the ultimate throwback festival.
Beamish Museum is one of NewcastleGateshead's stand-out attractions and a must-visit any time of year! In 2022, the award-winning attraction will continue their exciting Remaking Beamish project which includes the development of over 25 new exhibits and attractions and will usher in a new era to the museum in the form of a 1950s Town and 1950s farm. Visitors will be able to visit Front Street terrace in The 1950s Town (opening 2022) for a full immersive experience. Get your hair done, buy delicious fish and chips, sit in the booths in John’s cafe whilst listening to the jukebox, and visit the replicated home of famous North East artist Norman Cornish. BALTIC - the free admission, contemporary art gallery found on Gateshead Quayside - will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022. With a plethora of thought-provoking and innovative exhibitions on display as well as an array of family-friendly events, there are many reasons to pay the venue a visit throughout the year. To mark their anniversary, BALTIC will team up with Travelling Gallery, Scotland to create a roving exhibition which will take the creative of BALTIC on the road and into the community, from Gateshead to the Northumberland borders. The travelling exhibition will bring contemporary art to urban, rural and remote communities and culminated in a celebratory party for BALTIC’s twentieth birthday. Find out more.
Disney’s beloved Olivier award-winning stage musical Beauty and the Beast will be bringing all the drama to the Sunderland Empire stage in early 2022. The new production has been re-imagined and re-designed for this tour and will bring a charming elegance to the stage.
