After a remarkable 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II is rolling out the red carpet in the shape of a four-day weekend this June. The Jubilee Weekend will run from Thursday 2 - Sunday 5 June and provide another great excuse for a city break this summer. The outdoor spectacular, which takes place a 50-minute drive south of Newcastle city centre, returns with an additional event to mark the Queen's Jubilee. Taking place at 9.15pm on Saturday 4 June - the enchanting outdoor theatre showcase will gallop through two thousand years of history, myth and legend thanks to a cast of hundreds, dramatic staging and the ultimate firework display. 

That's not all, you have the option to start the platinum celebration early on Saturday 4 June. Arrive from 5.30pm for a unique 2022 showing of Fina and The Golden Cape - a jaw-dropping equine stunt show. Queenie is not the only one celebrating a momentous  year in 2022. Newcastle's most iconic department store Fenwick Newcastle mark their 140th anniversary this year and have treated visitors to a string of events, an exclusive exhibition and luxury collaborations with designers such as Rixo, Never Fully Dressed and Paul Smith. Part of the anniversary programming includes the launch of their art deco-inspired restaurant and music club named for founder JJ Fenwick's son, Arthur. If the sunshine makes an appearance, visitors should make the most of the brand-new park and recreation ground, aptly named Coronation Park in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. The park and recreation ground, which will be ceremonially opened on 27 May, includes a play area with a whole host of traditional-style play equipment, a miniature golf course, small football pitch and giant draughts board.     If you're feel less like celebrating royalty and more like enjoying the long weekend, visit for a cultural city break and pop along to Newcastle's independent theatre, Live Theatre on the Quayside for their latest original production, We Are The Best! Charged with the anarchic spirit of the North East, this is a high-energy ensemble comedy about finding your voice, the power of friendship and the joy of sticking two fingers up at a society that tries to define you.  The show runs across the bank holiday weekend with an extra blast of live music on Saturday 4 June after the performance. Stick around for a free gig from local indie-folk duo, Fawns and North London two piece slime-rockers The Slugs (it's worth staying just to find out what this slippery new genre is all about!).

On Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June, Northern Stage in Newcastle are showcasing Aidy The Awesome, a vibrant adventure which is bound to get you and your little theatre-goers ooo-ing and aaahh-ing!     This years marks 1900 years since UNESCO World Heritage Site Hadrian's Wall was built. What a lot of history that impressive Wall will have witnessed! It's very fitting that iconic landmark will be part of the Jubilee Beacons on Thursday 2 June to launch the international celebrations which mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70th year as Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth – her Platinum Jubilee. There will be more than 1,500 beacons lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries.     Be part of the celebrations at a special event in popular bank holiday spot, Ouseburn. Local pub The Cumberland Arms will be hosting a Hadrian's Wall Beacons Party from 4pm - 11pm. There will be locally crafted Roman beer brewed by Northern Alchemy as well as live performances and a multimedia light show.

    An anarchic brass band experience

    If you ever want to let your hair down and dance until your clothes stick to you, then you really need to keep an eye on Wylam Brewery at Palace of Arts' regular events programme. And this bank holiday weekend does not disappoint. On Sunday 5 June, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will blast onto the stage to bring you a night of loud and lively jazz. The band is made of seven brothers from Chicago and promise a high-energy night to end your bank holiday weekend in Newcastle.
