Newcastle is home to great nightlife, impressive layers of fascinating history and some really top notch food... and now it is also home to comedy! It was recently announced that the BBC had crowned Newcastle as their first City of Comedy and to consolidate the jolly title, the corporation are set to host their first BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle this May. The comedy festival - which spans three days - will be made up of industry-focused events and workshops to raise up the next generation of comedians and industry experts. Newcastle is known for its warm welcome and friendly folk who are certainly ready for a laugh. So to honour Newcastle's latest accolade as City of Comedy, we thought we'd have a look at the comedy, culture and cosmic carnivals that you really should have in your social calendar this month.

If you are looking for reasons to visit NewcastleGateshead this May then take a look at our guide to what's on, from comedy events which will celebrate the BBC Comedy Festival, the hotly anticipated return of popular cultural crawl - The Late Shows and the rather intriguingly named, Tour De Moon.

Jesters: Forgotten Stories of North East Comedy

Podcasts have become very much part of our day-to-day entertainment. If you're looking for something new then why not plug into Jesters: Forgotten Stories of North East Comedy? The new podcast which has been co-produced by trailblazing North East comedy cooperative Felt Nowt and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) sees hosts Gavin Webster, Lee Kyle, Si Beckwith and John Gibson explore the history of North East comedy. Hear stories of lesser-known comedians and entertainers, who paved the way for today’s comics with a wealth of sketches, songs, stories and silliness in each episode.

Jesters: Forgotten Stories of North East Comedy is available on TWAM’s Must-see Stories digital platform. New episodes are released on a Friday.

The Grinning Idiot at Northern Stage (July)

Ok so not strictly a May event but a cracking reason to come back to Newcastle in the summer for another bite at the comedy cherry. Legendary comedy club The Grinning Idiot will return to Newcastle for a one-off summer special on 2 July and bring with it four hilarious acts in one night. Taking place at Newcastle's Northern Stage, the show will be headlined by Terry Alderton (Live at the Apollo) with North East favourite, Lauren Pattison (nominated for the top newcomer award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 who regularly supports the likes of Katherine Ryan and Jason Manford on national tours). They will also be joined by Paul Sinha (you and I might know him as The Sinnerman from ITV's The Chase) and George Zach (a finalist in Britain’s Comedian of the Year 2021). Book your tickets from £15 on Northern Stage's website here.

Culture: The Late Shows are back...

The Late Shows HERO The Late Shows, Newcastle, Gateshead and Ouseburn

The North East's biggest and best late-night culture crawl – The Late Shows – kicks off on Friday 13 May for another two-day, out-of-hours celebration of the museums, galleries, historical buildings and venues Newcastle, Ouseburn and Gateshead have to offer.

The Late Shows Newcastle takes you on a cultural exploration at venues you may not have explored before, packed with unique events and have-a-go workshops - and all for FREE!

With so much going on at The Late Shows (13 & 14 May) and not long to cram it all in – we recommend you do your research and pick your favourites rather than racing around the whole city. The Friday night is dedicated to Ouseburn while the Saturday spreads across Newcastle city centre, along the Quayside and into Gateshead.

Highlights in 2022 include an invitation to a sing-along at The Common Room's 'speakeasy'; a chance to go up the tower at Newcastle Cathedral (pre-booking required) or a unique hands-on workshop at Ouseburn's Northern Print in collaboration with Muddy Fingers Pottery where you can experience the magic of Raku (Friday night only).

Whether you meticulously plan your route around The Late Shows Newcastle or want to hop between events and venues with wild abandon... charge up your Fit Bit and get yourselves out there to enjoy another year of Newcastle’s ultimate culture crawl!
