Unlike last year when all the services were virtual, churches and venues are opening their doors again and welcoming you back with open arms to attend their Christmas Carols.

Newcastle Cathedral

Newcastle Cathedral is a spectacular historic building and a magical venue for Christmas carols in the heart of city centre. The cathedral welcomes visitors this December to the Advent & Christmas services, musical performances, and to take part in a range of festive family-friendly events.

  • Northumbria University Carol Service takes place on Wednesday 8 December at 6pm. This annual event will include performances from the University and Cathedral Choirs, followed by a light festive drink reception.

  • Patronal Festival will be held on Saturday 11 December at 11am. Newcastle Cathedral will be joined by The Most Revd the Lord Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, for this service of Holy Communion. This is a free event, no booking is required.
  • Christmas Extravaganza will be held on Saturday 18 December at 7.30pm. A spectacular gala concert of traditional Christmas favourites from both the Cathedral Choir and guest instrumentalists.   • Carols by Candlelight takes place on Wednesday 22 December at 7pm. For all those who have previously enjoyed Carols at the Castle, join the Cathedral Choir for an exclusive and intimate evening of music in the Cathedral. Tickets cost £20, click to book
  • Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve at 6pm. A service of uplifting readings from Holy Scripture and exquisite sacred music is sung by the Cathedral Choir. This is a free event, no booking is required.
  • Candlelit Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at 11.30pm. A beautiful, atmospheric service with traditional carols, led by the Very Revd Geoff Miller, Dean of Newcastle. This is a free event, no booking is required.

Jesmond Parish Church

Jesmond Parish Church would love you to join them over this Christmas period. They are running in-person and online services, including the return of their popular Carols by Candlelight events and services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

  • Carols by Candlelight is on the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 12th December 4pm-7.30pm with traditional carols, Bible readings, and a short talk, Carols by Candlelight at Jesmond Parish Church is back! This is a free service.
  • Primetime Christmas Special is on the Thursday 16 December 12pm-3pm
  • Family Carols is on Christmas Eve 5pm-5.45 pm, a short family friendly Christmas Eve service.

City Church Newcastle

City Church Newcastle invites you to their carol service in Newcastle, Gateshead & beyond! 

  • Carols at City Church is on Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 December, 4-5 pm. Everyone is invited to join City Church for their annual Christmas Carols gathering featuring all your traditional favourites, the amazing Felling Brass Band, mince pies, hot chocolate & some special surprises.

St George’s Church Gateshead

Alive Church in Gateshead is hosting a series of enchanting carol services and advent events in their historic setting. The Chapel is one of Gateshead's oldest buildings and has been a church in one form or another for over 100 years.

  • Town Carols will be held on Saturday 12 December 6pm-8pm. Tis the season for Town Carols at The Chapel. There will be festive singing, a Christmas message, and delicious food and drinks.
  • Christmas Carols will be held on Sunday 19 December 4pm-5pm. Tis the season for Carols at Alive St George's. Their Christmas Carols is a joy-filled celebration with festive music, dancers, a retelling of the Christmas story, and Christmas snacks for everyone.
